APHCV receives $494,300 to support school-based health centers
December 15, 2011
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) awards Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, Inc. (APHCV) $494,300 to improve and modernize two of its school-based health centers: APHCV-John Marshall High School Health Center and the APHCV-Belmont Wellness Center. Funds will be used to purchase and replace equipment to improve health care services.
The APHCV-John Marshall High School Health Center has been providing a wide range of primary and preventive health care to students of John Marshall High School (JMHS) for over 10 years and more recently at Belmont High School with the opening of its newest health center in 2009. The APHCV-JMHS Health Center and APHCV-Belmont Wellness Center, often, provide a medical home for adolescents who, otherwise, would not have a regular source of health care. APHCV’s school-based health centers increase access for adolescents to primary care and also offer nutrition education with a registered dietician, mental and behavioral health care, substance abuse counseling, case management and health education. Being on campus also provides students opportunities to participate in health education programs, improving their overall knowledge of their health care needs and also development programs to work with their peers and learn about careers in the medical field.
Through the Affordable Care Act, DHHS has awarded over $14 million to 45 school-based health centers. At the APHCV-JMHS Health Center and APHCV-Belmont Wellness Center, funds will be used to improve patient care by upgrading medical equipment and computers. APHCV is also in the process of implementing electronic health records and this funding will help support implementation at APHCV’s school-based sites. “The people who benefit the most are the students because if they are feeling ill, they can't learn. We are pleased that we were awarded this grant and grateful that we can support healthy children and successful students," said Jeanne Aguinaldo, Youth Clinical Services Manager at APHCV. These upgrades will improve overall quality of care and help ensure children have access to the health care they need and deserve.
